With the warmer months upon us, it’s time to start thinking about your outdoor living space. Your backyard should be an extension of your home — an inviting and comfortable place where you enjoy spending your time.
If your yard isn’t quite up to that standard yet, here are a few ways you can enhance your living space outside.
1. Hot Tub
Why should your bathtub or shower be the only place you enjoy the relaxing benefits of hot water? An outdoor hot tub is a perfect way to spend your downtime outside.
Not only does hot tub therapy have numerous health benefits, but it also lowers stress levels and improves your overall well-being. A hot tub can be located on your deck or patio for easy access from the house.
You can build a pergola or gazebo over it, if you wish, for shade from the sun and shelter from the rain. There are also numerous decor options to give it some added pizzazz.
From having your decking surround your hot tub, to installing a sunken spa with stone steps surrounding it on three sides, the options are numerous.
A beautiful but cheaper option is to plant a rock garden around it and add some colourful pots of greenery.
Here are some hot tub installation ideas to help you get started and expand your outdoor living space:
2. Deck or Patio Extension
If your deck or patio is too small to accommodate your vision of an extended outdoor living space, then it’s time to expand them as well. For a patio, a stamped concrete overlay is an easy way to achieve more space.
Not only can it be installed over your existing patio, it ensures that old and new blend seamlessly together.
Decks are easier to expand if you have the space. You simply need to stain the new wood to match the old and you’re good to go.
If you don’t have much space to lengthen or widen your deck, however, you can consider adding a new level with stairs connecting them.
3. Sitting and Eating Areas
Creating outdoor “rooms” is also a great way to extend your living space outdoors. Be sure to separate the living areas into different sections. One part of your deck or patio can be reserved for food prep and eating.
This is where your barbecue and other outdoor kitchen items would be located. Whether you stick to a simple grill or decide to add outdoor cabinetry, countertop and a sink, your eating area should be nearby with a table and chairs.
If you don’t have much shade, you can erect a pergola or awning or simply have an umbrella over your table.
In a separate area, group together patio furniture to form an outdoor living room. From sofas and armchairs to tables and ottomans, you can achieve a cozy and comfy space for conversation, reading, or simply sitting and relaxing.
Don’t forget to invest in some colourful throw pillows and cozy throws for those cooler days and evenings.
4. Add Some Heat
An outdoor fireplace or fire pit is another wonderful addition to your yard. You can build your own or buy one ready-made. Choose a design that compliments the style of your outdoor living space for a unified look.
Be sure to locate the fire pit in a safe place, away from wooden pergolas, veranda roofs, and other such structures. Once your fire pit is in place, arrange some comfortable chairs around it for evening campfires with family or friends.
If you don’t want a fire pit but want to heat up your outdoor living space, a patio heater is a good alternative. Patio heaters provide thermal radiant heat, warming up your outdoor seating area even on the coolest spring day or fall evening.
